Why your back may hurt

Back pain may follow a strain, repeated loading, or a change in activity. Muscles, joints, discs, and nerves can contribute to symptoms. Pain can vary from a localized ache to discomfort that travels into the leg.

Your provider will ask about the onset of symptoms, past episodes, and movements that help or aggravate the pain. The evaluation helps determine whether conservative care is appropriate and whether further testing is needed.

Care and everyday movement

Depending on your examination, a plan may include chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue therapies, and guided exercises. Goals can focus on moving more comfortably and returning to activities that matter to you.

Staying active within your tolerance is often preferable to prolonged bed rest for uncomplicated back pain. Your provider can discuss suitable activities and adjust the plan if symptoms persist or change.

Symptoms that need medical attention

Seek emergency care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or progressive leg weakness. Back pain after major trauma also needs urgent assessment.

Prompt medical evaluation is important if back pain occurs with fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer. For non-emergency symptoms, contact the clinic to discuss an examination.
