Looking beyond the painful spot

Shoulder discomfort may involve muscles, tendons, or joints, and some symptoms originate in the neck. Overhead activity, repetitive work, and injuries can affect the way the shoulder moves.

An evaluation considers your neck and shoulder movement, strength, and health history. Describe any injury, difficulty reaching or lifting, night pain, and numbness or tingling in the arm.

Treatment based on the findings

When appropriate, care may include soft-tissue therapies, targeted exercises, and attention to joint movement. Your provider may recommend modifying aggravating activities while gradually rebuilding comfortable movement.

Some shoulder conditions require imaging or referral to another healthcare provider. A suspected fracture, dislocation, or significant tendon injury should not be treated as routine muscle soreness.

When to get urgent help

Seek emergency care for shoulder or arm pain with chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea. After an injury, a visibly deformed shoulder, inability to use the arm, or a cold or numb hand needs urgent assessment.

Persistent pain, worsening weakness, or a loss of movement warrants an evaluation. Contact the clinic to discuss whether a visit is appropriate for your symptoms.
